Fort De Soto and Other County Beaches Close

Fort De Soto, Fred Howard and Sand Key close due to rough surf and tidal flooding.

If you had any plans to take a gander at the rough seas at Fort DeSoto or another popular Pinellas County beach, you're out of luck.

Pinellas County closed Fort De Soto, Fred Howard and Sand Key because of the unsafe surf from Tropical Storm Debby.

Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources Department temporarily
closed portions of Fort De Soto, Fred Howard and Sand Key.

  • Fort De Soto: Surf conditions at Fort De Soto Park in Tierra Verde led to the closure of the beaches and the Gulf pier. Staff will be focusing on clean-up activities while the park is closed to the public.
  • Sand Key: Wind and surf conditions at Sand Key Park in Clearwater also present a safety concern and, the park is closed at this time.
  • Fred Howard: The causeway and beaches at Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs are currently closed due to tidal flooding and unsafe surf conditions. The upland portion of Fred Howard Park will remain open at this time.

Park staff are monitoring the beaches and hope to open the parks Wednesday.
