Man Cited For Contributing To Death Of St. Pete Scooter Driver, 72
The pedestrian from Tampa allegedly walked into the path of the oncoming scooter at St. Pete Beach.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - A Tampa man was cited Tuesday for contributing to a crash last month that resulted in the death of a motor scooter operator in St. Pete Beach, according to the police.
On the afternoon of Feb. 2, Jeffrey Kurnick of Tampa allegedly crossed Gulf Boulevard at the 70th Avenue intersection -- but not using the crosswalk -- and walked into the path of a motor scooter driven by 72-year-old David Lang of St. Pete's Beach, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
Lang was driving his 1985 Honda Elite northbound on Gulf in the median lane and lost control and fell to the ground after colliding with Kurnick, police said.

Lang was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead; Kurnick sustained minor injuries from the crash but refused medical attention, deputies said.
Initial reports indicated Lang suffered a heart attack following the crash, however, an investigation by the District Six Medical Examiner's Office determined Lang died from blunt trauma resulting from the crash, deputies said. The manner in which he died was determined to be an accident.

On Tuesday, investigators from the department's Major Accident Investigation Team contacted Kurnick at his Tampa residence and issued him a Uniform Traffic Citation (UTC) for failure to yield to the right of way for a vehicle. Kurnick is scheduled to attend a mandatory court appearance March 24 at 10:30 a.m.
