ST. PETERSBURG, FL - A pedestrian struck by a car this morning in St. Petersburg died from his injuries, police said.

The 51-year-old man at 3:53 a.m. was crossing 18th Avenue South, from south to the north, when struck by a 2007 Toyota Camry driven by Charles Damar Wallace, 22, and carrying two passengers, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Wallace told officers he was driving westbound on 18th when the man crossed both eastbound lanes and paused at the double yellow line as if to let the Camry pass. The pedestrian, however, suddenly continued walking northbound, and the Camry could not avoid the pedestrian and struck him, police said.
