Sand Key Sewer Repair Done

While the work to repair the main sewer line on Sand Key is complete, crews still are working to repave the road.

The main sewer line on Gulf Boulevard at Sand Key ruptured on Tuesday afternoon, causing traffic delays as workers repaired the damage.

Crews worked through the night on repairs to the 16 inch PVC sewer line. The pipe burst at a fitting that was installed during a road widening project in 2000, officials said. The pump station and forcemain are working again, officials said.

Northbound traffic will stay rerouted until the work to repair the road is finished. The southbound lane was not effected. 

The line broke about three-quarters of a mile south of the Sand Key Bridge near the Bayside Gardens complex at the 1300 block of Gulf Boulevard.

Some sewage was not contained and entered the Intracoastal Waterway through a storm drain. State officials are monitoring are testing the water to make sure normal bacteria levels are present.
