• Punta Gorda Publix shopper, 70, randomly stabbed in the face, authorities say (winknews.com) — A 70-year-old shopper was seriously injured after being randomly stabbed in the face and neck with a box cutter inside the Publix on Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda on Oct. 10. Police say the suspect immediately surrendered, admitted he entered intending to kill someone, and is now jailed on an aggravated battery charge while the victim recovers from extensive lacerations and stitches.
   

• FHP: Motorcyclist dies in hit-and-run crash on I-75 (yoursun.com) — A Sarasota motorcyclist died late Saturday night after losing control on northbound I-75 just east of Punta Gorda, where another vehicle struck him and then fled, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers have not released a vehicle description and are asking anyone who may have seen the crash near the U.S. 17 exit to share tips with Crimestoppers or FHP.
   

• TSA considers next steps for privatized screening after scrapping Gold+ plans (marylandmatters.org) — Punta Gorda travelers may see future changes in how airport security screening is managed, as TSA rethinks its privatization plans and looks to evolve the Screening Partnership Program used at Punta Gorda Airport. Local airport leadership wants ideas from the canceled Gold+ effort preserved, which could influence how private contractors handle checkpoints and technology at smaller airports like yours.
