📰 News we're reading

1. No more free meals at some Palm Beach County Schools next year (cw34.com) — Families in Riviera Beach should prepare for big changes to school meals next year, as Palm Beach County will end universal free breakfast and lunch starting August 10. Many campuses, including Riviera Beach Preparatory Academy and West Riviera Elementary, will keep free meals, but others will charge set prices unless families qualify for free or reduced lunch.

2. Will higher building fees make this city's development a boom or bust? (palmbeachpost.com) — Riviera Beach is weighing a massive hike in developer impact fees that could push the cost to build a typical single-family home from under $2,000 to more than $35,000. City officials say the money is needed for new fire stations, a police headquarters, and a $400 million water plant, while some council members worry about affordable housing and costs for individual homeowners.

3. Riviera Beach man busted after SWAT finds fentanyl, illegal machine gun, cocaine (cbs12.com) — A SWAT raid at a home on West 20th Street in Riviera Beach led deputies to seize fentanyl, marijuana, and multiple firearms, including a weapon with an illegal conversion device. A 23-year-old resident now faces several felony drug and weapons charges after investigators say evidence suggested active dealing and attempts to destroy narcotics during the search.

4. Floatopia chaos: Fights, gunfire and multiple arrests near Peanut Island (wptv.com) — Law enforcement responded to fights and reported gunfire Sunday night at Jim Barry Park in Riviera Beach after the crowded Floatopia boat party near Peanut Island spilled into the docks. Deputies arrested several people for unruly behavior, and the chaotic scene has some boaters calling for a stronger law enforcement presence at future unsanctioned water parties in Palm Beach County.
