May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be

I like word games like Scrabble, crossword puzzles and word searches. To me it
helps keep the mind sharp and the eyes focused. Being a lover of words, I was
blessed to inherit my grandfather’s dictionary that he used when he was a proof
reader for a newspaper. On the blank pages of his dictionary he wrote quotes in
his old English handwriting that are treasures to me today. Each morning when he lived with our family, he instructed me to open up the dictionary, learn to
spell a word, any word of my choosing, know its meaning and be ready to share it at dinner when he returned from work. Day after day we did that. I think he
would be proud that I have used our mutual love of words to glorify God by
writing “Reflections by the Sea”.
Walking along the edge of the ocean, so many words come to mind. Sand, blue skies, salty air, shorebirds, fishing, umbrellas, children laughing, waves and so much more. Those are the words that describe what we see and hear. But what about words for what we feel? Perhaps joy, contentment, happiness and peace describes our feeling of being near the beach? Our words can be a window to our soul. The emotions inside us can be given a voice. Speaking good words gives encouragement, praises accomplishment, and expresses love and affection. Many of us save special sentiments written in cards and letters that reflect love we have shared. Words that teachers write on a report card can be so impactful they have been proven to be words that some students live by the rest of their lives.

How can we sow encouragement into a person or a situation? By asking God for wisdom, for the right words and for an opportunity. He will give us courage and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome any shyness or reluctance we may feel. We just have to look around, maybe even in our own family to see there some that are hurting, that loss hasn’t been reconciled, and sadness that lingers in the air like a dark cloud. Be the one that God uses today to speak good words that will make a difference in another’s life. We have all we need on the inside of us.
