71-Year-Old Bicyclist Struck By Pickup Truck In Sarasota

SARASOTA, FL — A 71-year-old bicyclist was killed over the weekend along South Tamiami Trail near Sunnyside Court, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

The agency's Genevieve Judge said the the bicyclist was struck by a pickup truck around 9:15 p.m. Saturday as he attempted to cross the highway.

"The bicyclist, a 71-year-old male, was not wearing a helmet and did not use a crosswalk," Judge said on Monday.

"Bystanders performed CPR on the bicyclist and EMS pronounced the bicyclist deceased shortly after their arrival," she explained.

The driver of the pickup truck remained on the scene and was cooperative with investigators, according to Judge, who did not identify the driver or the bicyclist.

The southbound lanes of South Tamiami Trail were closed for about two hours as a result of the crash.

Judge said the incident remains under investigation by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.
