County, school district, and tax officials are now wrangling over whether another formal vote is needed, leaving Sarasota County Schools waiting on funds for teachers and staff.
2. Sarasota County teacher arrested for touching students, police say (heraldtribune.com) — A Sarasota County middle school teacher has been arrested on felony charges after police investigated reports of inappropriate touching of students, and he is being held at the Sarasota County Jail without bond. North Port police and Sarasota County Schools stress student safety and urge anyone with additional information to contact investigators as they continue the case.
3. Florida Studio Theatre goes for meaningful laughs in summer season (heraldtribune.com) — Florida Studio Theatre in downtown Sarasota is packing summer with lighthearted mainstage shows, cabaret tributes, and expanded improv while pausing its July Sarasota Improv Festival during construction of the new McGillicuddy Arts Plaza. The $57 million project will add a parking garage, artist housing, hotel-style units for arts workers, and new theaters, reshaping how locals experience performances for years to come.
4. Popular Sarasota doughnut shop closes one of its locations (heraldtribune.com) — One of Sarasota’s favorite doughnut spots, Five-O Donut Co., has closed its University Town Center shop, citing the need to cut costs, but its original downtown Sarasota location on Ringling Boulevard remains open. The locally owned chain now operates three stores, including Bradenton and Ellenton, as UTC’s dining scene continues to evolve with several new restaurant openings and more on the way.
