While an area of low pressure across the northern half of Florida has low chances of forming, it’s likely to bring wet weather to the Sunshine State into early next week, forecasters said.
The low-pressure area, stretching from the northeastern Gulf, across Florida, to coastal Georgia, has a 20 percent chance of strengthening into a tropical depression or storm over the next seven days, the National Hurricane Center said.
The next named storm for this season is Bertha. The first system of the season, Tropical Storm Arthur, formed June 17 off the Texan coast.
The system isn’t likely to develop further because of land interaction, wind shear and dry air, Fox 13’s Paul Dellegatto wrote in a social media post.
It still has the makings of a wet weekend, he wrote. “These are the type of set-ups that can do wonders to help alleviate drought conditions … Regardless of any development, the net result will be an increase in rain coverage this weekend - into the first few days of next week.”
Calling it a “weak” system, Denis Phillips, chief meteorologist for Tampa Bay 28, agreed that low will be “a rainmaker for parts of Florida,” he wrote in a social media post.
And some areas can expect quite a bit of rain, meteorologist Noah Bergren with Fox 35 wrote in a social media post.
“The FOX Weather model is consistent, with other models too in suggesting regardless of what the low turns into in the Gulf, potentially significant culminating rain totals somewhere in the Sarasota - [Anna Maria Island] - St. Pete - Clearwater area through Monday,” he wrote.
Those areas could see 7 to 10 inches of rain with some zones even getting 10 inches or more, Bergren wrote, adding, “Definitely think for central Florida, these areas could end up the rain ‘bullseye’ from this event.”
