The investigation, which began in early 2024, led to 83 counts of possessing child sexual abuse material and a March conviction, underscoring the county's aggressive stance on such crimes.
2. Fridge-sized rocks being placed to slow Bay Park flooding - WSLR+Fogartyville (wslr.org) — Work is underway at Sarasota's Bay Park to install massive shoreline rocks and reshape the land, aiming to better protect the waterfront and nearby historic buildings from hurricane-driven flooding. The $10 million "Resilient Shoreline" phase will raise elevations, add a rain garden and walkways, and extend improvements into Centennial Park, with more resilience upgrades planned through 2030.
3. Sarasota's Nearly 14-Acre Marian Anderson Site Moves Closer to Redevelopment (sarasotamagazine.com) — Sarasota commissioners just advanced rezoning and sale changes for the long-vacant, contaminated Marian Anderson Place site in Newtown, moving plans for a health clinic and light-industrial jobs closer to reality. The city tightened rules to block heavy recycling and concrete-crushing uses while giving the developer more time to complete state-supervised environmental cleanup before any construction can begin.
4. Senior Friendship Centers expands meals for Sarasota County seniors (baynews9.com) — Sarasota County seniors can now get weekday breakfast in addition to lunch at Senior Friendship Centers in Sarasota, helping stretch tight budgets as food prices rise. The expanded meal program also combats isolation by giving older adults a place to socialize, and the organization is actively seeking more volunteers to keep up with growing demand.
5. 25 years later, a Sarasota 9/11 student shares story of tragedy and hope (mysuncoast.com) — A former second-grader from Sarasota's Emma E. Booker Elementary reflects on being in the classroom with President George W. Bush as he learned of the 9/11 attacks. Her memories highlight the shock felt by teachers and students, the letter she later exchanged with the president, and the sense of unity and resilience she still carries from that day.
