SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Two people have been arrested in connection with an alleged financial exploitation scheme involving an elderly Sarasota couple that resulted in more than $361,000 in payments from the victims' bank accounts, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The investigation began July 20, when Imran Din, owner of A & Z Jewelers, contacted the sheriff's office after becoming suspicious of two customers, Reinier Reinoso, 42, and Suyeng Daniels-Lopez, 45, SCSO said.

The pair had made several jewelry purchases totaling more than $40,000 in a short period. When they returned for a fourth purchase, Din asked for identification, which neither customer could provide, prompting him to contact law enforcement.

Detectives discovered that the credit card used for the purchases belonged to a Sarasota man who died in March 2026.

The man and his wife had been living in an assisted living facility, where Daniels-Lopez had been assigned to care for them from December 2025 until her employment was terminated in June 2026, the sheriff's office said.

Between June 2 and Aug. 25, the deceased man's credit card was used in more than 550 transactions totaling $240,272.85, investigators found. During the same period, 21 payments totaling $361,938.23 were made from the couple's bank accounts to the credit card company.

Both Reinoso and Daniels-Lopez were arrested and charged with exploitation of an elderly person, grand theft from a person 65 years of age or older, and criminal use of personal identifiable information, the sheriff's office said.

"Our elderly residents deserve to feel safe, especially when placing their trust in those responsible for their care," Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman said in a statement.
