Baby's Fractured Leg Leads to Man's Arrest In Sarasota

The 2-month-old infant first was seen at a Sarasota hospital, then transferred to a St. Petersburg facility, where detectives were called.

SARASOTA, FL – A 27-year-old Sarasota on Wednesday morning was arrested in connection with the suspicious circumstances surrounding a two-month-old with a fractured femur, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Zachary Wierzba was arrested on suspicion of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm after turning himself into authorities in the case which began Oct. 3, the agency said.

Detectives were called on that day to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Saint Petersburg, where the baby was admitted with the injury, and spoke with Wierzba, who reportedly informed them he was caring for the child during the time of the injury, the department said.

He initially took the infant to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and gave an account of what happened, however, "doctors discovered the injuries were inconsistent with his statements," the sheriff's office said.

The infant was transported to Johns Hopkins for further diagnoses. A report was filed with the Department of Children and Family Services, and a physician with the Child Protection Team determined the infant’s injury was the result of physical abuse, the agency said.
