Hailing from Siberia, classical saxophonist Valentin Kovalev is an ebullient and highly eclectic performer whose unique style was developed after studying in Russia, France, and the United States. Winner of multiple prestigious international competitions, Kovalev gave a sold-out debut recital at Carnegie Hall during the 2023-24 season. His work is driven by his love of fostering connections, exemplified by his vast community on social media, and he has committed support to Ukrainian saxophonists and other marginalized voices in the classical music world. Joined by Joseph Holt on piano, Kovalev’s program includes music by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Bizet, and Piazzolla. In an effort to support mental wellness and reduce the stigma of seeking help, nonprofit organization Sunshine From Darkness has announced its 2026 “Step Into the Light Mental Health Summit.” The event – which costs $25, including all sessions and lunch – takes place on Saturday, May 2, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Mote SEA (Science Education Aquarium), located at 225 University Town Center Drive, near Nathan Benderson Park. The Summit, purposefully scheduled during Mental Health Awareness Month, is designed to empower attendees with practical coping skills, tools to support mental wellness in our community, and inspiration to break the stigma surrounding mental illness. Mental health practitioners, those working in a mental health-adjacent field, or individuals whose life has been impacted by mental illness – their own or a loved one - are especially encouraged to attend. This year’s Summit will center on the shared human experiences that shape our emotional wellbeing — grief, trauma, family challenges, and the everyday stressors that impact our mental health. Through speaker sessions on mindfulness, coping skills, interactive experiences, and the healing power of music therapy, the summit will create a safe, inclusive space for individuals and families to learn, connect, and strengthen their resilience. Arts Advocates has added two new paintings to their collection by Sarasota artist Beth Arthur, an historic member of the Sarasota Art Colony, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday this year. Arts Advocates will display her two paintings and give a talk about Arthur, who will be in attendance. 
Arthur spent six decades working as a Sarasota contemporary artist, holding 30 gallery showings while earning countless honors and awards. The Sarasota Art Colony was a group who defined a post WWII era in which members created art enhanced by the region, often featuring coastal landscapes, influenced by the Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus, while closely collaborating with fellow creatives and local art schools including the Ringling Arts College. The synergy of these influences boosted Sarasota’s arts reputation.
Beth Arthur came to Sarasota in the 1950s with a degree in fine arts from the University of Pittsburgh. She accepted a student scholarship from Hilton Leech, who originally came to Sarasota to organize the Ringling School of Art, and who many remember was a prominent teacher and painter responsible for influencing many artists. Arthur served as a staff artist at the Ringling Barnum Bailey Circus creating props and dazzling displays. She always said that the circus was a key part of her development and that the circus was “an unending source of imagination.” There, she met more fellow artists who became lifelong friends and collaborators. Renowned Sarasota artist Syd Solomon was a close friend of Arthur’s and helpful to her career while she firmly cemented her place within the Sarasota Art Colony.

ARC Walk is a feel-good morning designed to bring animal lovers together in support of a powerful mission: giving pets a healthier future through affordable spay and neuter services. Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens: “The New Generation of Musical Theater,” featuring Hermitage Fellows Adam Chanler-Berat and Julian Hornik, Wednesday, May 6, 6:30pm: Adam Chanler-Berat, a celebrated Broadway and television actor as well as a playwright, is known for originating leading roles in Next to Normal, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Amélie, as well as appearing as Jordan Glassberg on HBO’s Gossip Girl. Returning Hermitage Fellow Julian Hornik has developed work with Hermitage Fellow Mark Sonnenblick and is a recipient of the Jonathan Larson Grant from the American Theatre Wing. These two extraordinary talents are frequent collaborators and rising stars in the New York musical theater world. They are now here at the Hermitage developing a new musical together. Join us for the final “Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens” program of the season as we hear these celebrated artists talk about their creative process and share original songs. Explore the principal styles and stylistic influences of American, European, and Asian silver. Andrew will provide a historic overview of when the world’s thirst for silver bullion grew to epidemic proportions from the late 16th century to the latest fashion amongst today’s master silversmiths. Learn about silver hallmarks and how to distinguish between early masterpieces and later reproductions. This session will feature an exceptional collection of over 100 objects ranging over six centuries of sterling silver accoutrements from Andrew’s personal silver collection. This session will culminate in addressing the conservation and soaring precious metals markets, as well as how to navigate buying and selling in today’s ever-changing valuations.

Baroque Treasures – on Mother’s Day – begins with harpsichordist Paulo Bordignon performing music of Bach and Couperin. Then Sarasota Orchestra principal oboe Bobby Nunes and principal harp Phoebe Powell, accompanied by strings and harpsichord, each perform a concerto for their instrument by baroque master G.F.
