Cold Weather Shelter Opens At Salvation Army

Temperatures in Sarasota are expected to drop as low as 44 degrees Thursday night.

SARASOTA, FL — The Salvation Army Center of Hope at 1400 10th Street in Sarasota will open as a cold weather shelter for the homeless and others in need Thursday night, Sarasota County Emergency Management tweeted.

The county has coordinated with municipal partners and the Salvation Army to open the shelter, as temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night. Temperatures will drop as low as 44 degrees with winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, according to the Weather Channel.

Intake began at 7 p.m. Breakfast will be served at 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

Sarasota County officials also tweeted a reminder for residents that pets shouldn’t be left outside in the cold weather and citizens who are outside overnight “are encouraged to dress in several warm layers (and) limit skin exposure to the wind.”

Sarasota County Fire Department officials have also advised citizens to use caution when heating their homes. The risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases during cold weather due to the improper use of heating devices.
