Reminder: DUI Wolfpack Set To Prowl

Sarasota and Manatee County motorists with big party plans over Memorial Day weekend may want to designate a driver.

Motorists who travel through Sarasota, Manatee and other nearby counties may want to think twice about getting behind the wheel impaired over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Florida Highway Patrol has announced plans for a DUI Wolfpack Operation. Meant to pull impaired motorists off area roads, the detail is set to kick off around 9 p.m. Friday, May 27, and should continue until about 5 a.m. on Saturday.

The “roaming” wolf pack intends to focus on Interstate 75 and other major state and county roads in Manatee, Sarasota, Highlands, Hardee and Desoto counties, an email from the highway patrol said.

“The Florida Highway Patrol organizes such details to proactively remove impaired drivers from the roadways and ultimately enhance the safety of the motoring public,” the email said. “Troopers conducting the detail will be mobile while monitoring traffic in an effort to maximize their visibility and effectiveness in removing impaired drivers from the roadways.”

While designating a driver or making other advanced plans to avoid impaired driving are always recommended, AAA is also offering help over the long holiday weekend to keep the roads safe. The company and Bud Light have teamed up to provide safe rides home for impaired drivers – and their vehicles – starting Friday night. The Tow 2 Go service will be available through Tuesday morning.
