1 Killed In Nokomis Hit-And-Run Crash Thursday Night, Driver Runs From Scene On Foot: FHP

The driver of a pickup truck ran a red light at Laurel Road, I-75, hitting two vehicles and killing one person, Florida Highway Patrol said.

NOKOMIS, FL — Authorities are looking for a hit-and-run driver who left the scene after killing one person and seriously injuring another in a crash on Laurel Road Thursday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

A pickup truck was traveling east on Laurel Road in the left lane, approaching the northbound I-75 exit ramp around 9:15 p.m., FHP said. At the same time, two other vehicles — another pickup truck and a car — were on the exit ramp waiting to turn left onto Laurel Road.

The first pickup truck ran a red light, driving through the intersection as the other two vehicles turned left, FHP said.

The truck hit the left side of the pickup truck that was turning, killing the driver, a 52-year-old Nokomis man. He was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP said.

The truck also hit the front of the car, which was driven by a 64-year-old Miami man, who was seriously injured in the crash.

The driver of the first pickup truck, who is unknown, ran from the crash on foot, FHP said.
