Popular Downtown Sarasota Restaurant Abruptly Closes

SARASOTA, FL — A popular downtown Sarasota restaurant abruptly closed for good after 15 years in business.

Indigenous, at 239 S. Links Ave. in Towles Court, announced its closure Tuesday in a social media post.

“After 15 years of serving this community and working with our staff, farmers, fishermen, bakers, producers, and community, we are ready for a change,” according to the post. “We are so proud of our accomplishments, accolades, and the love that you so graciously awarded our hearts with. Thank you for all your support and love.”

No reason for the closure was included in the announcement.

The beloved restaurant made a name for itself through sustainable practices and intentionally using local ingredients.

Chef Steve Phelps, an advocate for sustainable seafood, was a two-time James Beard Awards semifinalist for Best Chef: South.
