Ziegler, Enos, Marinelli Lead Sarasota County School Board Races

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Multiple candidates pulled ahead as preliminary results rolled in Tuesday night in the races for Sarasota County Commission and the Sarasota County School Board, with all precincts reporting as of 9:19 p.m., according to unofficial results from the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and local results started being reported shortly thereafter. Florida counties are required to release updates every 45 minutes until they have completed their counts, Mark Ard, a spokesman for the Florida Department of State, told the New York Times.

Sarasota County Commission

In District 2, three Democrats were trying for the nomination from their party — Fredd “Glossie” Atkins, Hagen Brody and Mike Cosentino. In a tight race, Atkins had the lead Tuesday night with 35.24 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections. Brody and Cosentino were both close behind him with 34.2 percent and 30.57 percent of the vote, respectively.

Meanwhile, two Republicans were in the running in the same district, Lourdes Ramirez and Mark Smith, who took the lead with 57.74 percent of the vote, unofficial results show.

The winners of both District 2 primaries will go head to head Nov. 8.

In District 4, the Democratic contender, Daniel Kuether, was unchallenged for the nomination.

Two Republicans, Mark Hawkins and Joseph Neunder, faced off in that district, though. Neunder had a strong lead Tuesday night with 73.54 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Sarasota County School Board

In District 1, incumbent Bridget Ziegler, the Moms for Liberty co-founder who is married to Christian Ziegler, vice chair of Florida’s Republican Party, faced a Democratic opponent in the race, Dawnyelle Singleton.

Ziegler leads her challenger by taking home 56.35 percent of the vote, unofficial results show.

In District 4, Lauren Kurnov and Robyn A. Marinelli vied for the seat. According to unofficial results, Marinelli has the lead with 52.8 percent of the vote.

In District 5, Nora Cietek and Timothy Enos, former Sarasota County Schools police chief faced off. Enos leads his opponent with 52.74 percent of the vote, unofficial results show.
