Sarasota Inmate’s Death Under Investigation

A Nokomis woman was found unresponsive in her jail cell Tuesday evening in what authorities are calling an apparent suicide.

Sarasota, FL — The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Tuesday night death of a female inmate in the county's jail.

According to the agency, Judy Lamb, 56, was found unresponsive in her cell around 6:08 p.m. Tuesday. Jail staff gave Lamb CPR and she was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Deputies say Lamb was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Lamb was arrested on Monday in connection with the death of a 7-pound dog in Nokomis on June 27, the sheriff’s office said in a media release. The charge she faced Monday was animal cruelty.

Lamb also had prior arrests that included aggravated battery, DUI and violation of probation.

The sheriff’s office has not said how Lamb died, but has said it was an apparent suicide. The Medical Examiner’s Office is also investigating the incident.
