Teen Charged With Murder In Fatal Sarasota Shooting: Police

A 17-year-old from Manatee County was charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Sarasota, police said.

SARASOTA, FL — A teen was arrested in connection with an early Tuesday morning homicide in Sarasota.

The 17-year-old suspect from Manatee County was arrested there on Wednesday and faces a felony charge of second-degree murder, the Sarasota Police Department said in a news release.

Though police named the suspect, it’s Patch policy not to name a minor suspect unless they’ve been charged as an adult. It’s not known whether the teen has been charged as a juvenile or an adult.

Officers responded to a call of a person lying on the ground and bleeding near 15th Street and Central Avenue around 12:30 a.m. They performed CPR until EMS arrived.

The victim, an 18-year-old man, died on the way to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, police said.

Chief Rex Troche credited investigators and officers for the quick arrest.

"Solving a homicide in less than 48 hours is no easy feat," he said. "We owe this to tenacity of our officers and detectives and their drive to keep our community safe."
