Teenager Arrested in Today's Shooting in Gillespie Park

Police arrested the 16-year-old who is now in custody. The victim is being treated for non life-treatening injuries at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sarasota Police responded to reports of gunshots fired in the area near Gillespie Park. Police say the actual crime location is a residence near the 1900 block of 9th Street.

The 20-year-old victim is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot injury at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Shortly after police arrived, witnesses helped identify the suspect, 16-year-old Miguel Carrizales. 

Carrizales has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, according to SPD.

SPD said a concerned citizen called police to advise that the weapon used (a shotgun) had been hidden in a trashcan near the crime location.  The weapon has been recovered.

This is the second arrest of a 16-year-old for a crime involving a gun in North Sarasota in the last 30 days. 

Shawn Tyson, 16, is currently being held and charged with who were found dead in Newtown on April 16.
