100-Year-Old Tampa Woman World's Oldest Competitive Powerlifter

TAMPA, FL — Edith Murway-Traina never let a little thing like age get in the way of having fun and staying active, whether it's dancing, socializing with friends at the Jackson Springs Community Center or earning a Guinness World Record as the oldest female competitive powerlifter.

Guinness World Records this week announced Murway-Traina's powerlifting prowess had earned the great-great-grandmother inclusion in the 2022 Guinness World Records. Her last powerlifting competition was in 2019 at the age of 98 years and 94 days. After a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she's back to training for her next competition.

Murway-Traina's spirit of adventure and healthy lifestyle will be recognized on Sunday, Aug. 8, with a celebration at the Jackson Springs Community Center, 8620 Jackson Springs Road, Tampa, for her 100th birthday. Murway-Traina, a former line dance teacher at the community center, is so popular that the dance studio there is named after her, and it's where she first gained fame as the powerlifting nonagenarian.

Murway-Traina remains active and social as she prepares to celebrate her entry into the Centennial Club. Those at the celebration will share memories, photos and good times with Murway-Traina and are encouraged to wear purple, her favorite color.
