9 Hillsborough High Schools Ranked Among Best In State, Nation

TAMPA, FL -- Students in Hillsborough County Public Schools are outperforming students across the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

It released its list of The Best High Schools in America on Wednesday, May 9, and nine Hillsborough County public high schools ranked among the top in the state and nation.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings include data on more than 20,500 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. The rankings are based on performance on state assessments and how well they serve all students, not just those bound for college.

“Our students continue to show our community and everyone across the nation the skills and knowledge they are mastering in our classrooms,” said Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins. “Along with our record-setting graduation rate and our ranking as a top large school district in the country, this shows another reason parents are excited about our schools. I applaud our teachers, administrators and support staff for continuing to challenge our students and provide them the supports they need to be successful.”

The high schools were ranked statewide and nationally, along with a separate category for the best magnet programs. Nine Hillsborough County Public Schools were ranked among the best in the state and nationwide, and four ranked among the best schools with magnet programs. The list includes:

Gold Medal

• Plant High School #29 in Florida (#343 nationally)
• Robinson High School #32 in Florida (463 nationally) (#79 Magnet ranking)
• Newsome High School #33 in Florida (466 nationally)

Silver Medal

• Steinbrenner High School #37 in Florida (#513 nationally)
• Sickles High School #56 in Florida (719 nationally)
• Strawberry Crest High School #64 in Florida (810 nationally) (116 in magnet rankings)
• Tampa Bay Tech High School #104 in Florida (1,225 nationally) (163 in magnet rankings)
• Riverview High School #115 in Florida (1,465 nationally)
• Jefferson High School #126 in Florida (1,654 nationally) (213 in magnet rankings)
