1. Tropical Storm Dolly Forms In The Atlantic (patch.com) — Tampa Bay residents are being reassured by local meteorologist Denis Phillips that newly formed Tropical Storm Dolly poses no threat to Florida, thanks to hostile wind shear expected to weaken it. The storm is forecast to bring heavy rain and gusty squalls to the Leeward Islands and nearby areas, while broader forecasts now point to a quieter Atlantic hurricane season influenced by El Niño. Tampa and the surrounding region remain one of the few relatively favorable spots for any potential tropical development this year, but experts say there's nothing to worry about right now.
2. Florida hub bets $1.5 billion on Delta Air Lines becoming an international gateway (wheninyourstate.com) — Tampa International Airport is moving ahead with a $1.5 billion Airside D terminal that will add 16 gates, a new international arrivals area, and a Delta Sky Club by 2029. With Delta anchoring at least six gates, the project aims to boost Tampa's capacity to 35 million passengers and bring more nonstop domestic and overseas flight options to local travelers.
3. Interactive train exhibit opens at Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa (wfla.com) — Families in Tampa can now explore the new Suncoast Imagination Station, an accessible, hands-on train exhibit at the Glazer Children's Museum featuring miniature versions of familiar Tampa landmarks. Kids navigate tracks, solve challenges, and build stories while developing spatial reasoning and creativity. The museum, at 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, designed the exhibit for multiple ages and wheelchair users.
4. Tampa City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak says she has breast cancer (cltampa.com) — Tampa City Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Lynn Hurtak has revealed she's been diagnosed with breast cancer but says she'll keep working and campaigning while undergoing a 12-week chemo regimen starting Monday. Speaking from Tampa City Hall, she emphasized continuing key votes, community "Lynn Listens" sessions, and opposition to using public money for a Tampa Bay Rays stadium deal.
5. Tampa City Council approves funds for proposed Rays deal (wkrg.com) — Tampa City Council has narrowly approved a $2.3 billion plan advancing a new Tampa Bay Rays ballpark at Hillsborough College's Dale Mabry campus, with the city contributing $80 million mainly for infrastructure. Hillsborough County would be asked to provide $796 million, and the Rays would cover cost overruns. The deal still needs county commission approval, with the team targeting a 2029 opening.
