TAMPA, FL — A 38-year-old man was arrested after repeatedly stabbing a victim during an attack at a Tampa residence, stealing the victim's vehicle and fleeing the scene, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Deputies responded to the stabbing at a home in the 12000 block of North Central Avenue, where they found the victim with multiple stab wounds, on Tuesday around 3 p.m.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and remained stable but in serious condition as of Thursday, the sheriff's office said.
Detectives reviewing surveillance footage identified Yoandry Hernandez Penton as the suspect. The footage showed him repeatedly stabbing the victim with a knife, striking the victim in the face and rummaging through the victim's pockets, the sheriff's office said.
After the attack, Hernandez Penton allegedly got into the victim's vehicle and fled at a high rate of speed, according to investigators.
Detectives later found the abandoned vehicle in the 6000 block of North Hubert Avenue. Additional surveillance footage showed Hernandez Penton leaving the vehicle and walking away from the area, authorities said.
After identifying Hernandez Penton and obtaining an arrest warrant, detectives found him on foot on Wednesday, shortly before 5 p.m., in the area of the 1000 block of West Hillsborough Avenue.
Hernandez Penton was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle and possession of cocaine.
"This was a brutal and relentless attack that left a victim with life-threatening injuries," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Our detectives moved quickly to identify the suspect, secure critical evidence, and take him into custody."
