Anti-Violence March Set for Saturday

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and Sulphur Springs residents hope to send a message to criminals.

Motorists who pass through the Sulphur Springs area Saturday are likely to encounter an unusual sight.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor, two of her fellow officers and area residents plan to hit the streets to “march against violence.” The walk begins at noon at Abundant Life Church, 8117 N. 13th St. and ends at Idlewild Sulphur Springs Church, 8209 N. 19th St.

The idea is to “march side-by-side to send a message that crime will not be tolerated,” the department wrote in an email to media.

This is the first in a series of planned anti-violence rallies.

Saturday’s route includes a stop at 920 E. Sitka St. where 14-year-old Richard Newton was shot and killed in March. Newton was attending an outdoor birthday party when he was killed. After a moment of silence, walkers will continue on to Idlewild where refreshments will be served and entertainment is planned.
