Bank Robbery Suspect Dropped His Name, Cops Say

The man is accused of trying to rob a SunTrust Thursday afternoon.

TAMPA, FL — A 50-year-old Tampa man faces attempted robbery charges after police say he made a critical error while allegedly committing the crime.

The incident in question unfolded around 1:08 p.m. Thursday when a man walked into the 4545 Himes Ave. N. SunTrust bank branch. The man handed the teller a note that demanded $50,000 in cash. He fled the bank on foot, taking the note with him, when he realized he wasn’t getting the cash, the Tampa Police Department wrote in an email to media.

When police and the FBI responded to the scene, they happened to find the note in the bank parking lot. They quickly discovered it had been written on a SunTrust deposit slip and then they noticed something more.

There was a second note crumpled up inside the first. That “second note (was) written on a PNC Bank deposit slip (along with) a pay stub with the defendant’s name on it,” the email said.

It didn’t take police long after that discovery to track their suspect down to his mother’s home, the email said. Once at the woman’s home, they searched the suspect’s vehicle and found the blue hooded sweatshirt the bank robber was reported to be wearing.

Danae Diaz, 50, was brought into custody, charged with attempted robbery.

Diaz remained in the Hillsborough County Jail Friday in lieu of $3,750 bond, jail records indicate.
