Bullet Hits Door Of Tampa Middle School During Drive-By Shooting

The Tampa Police Department is investigating a shooting in which a stray bullet a steel exterior door at Orange Grove Middle School.

TAMPA, FL — The Tampa Police Department is investigating a shooting in which a stray bullet a steel exterior door at Orange Grove Middle School.

The police department's SpotShotter gunshot detection system alerted police of a shooting near the middle school at 3415 N 16th St. in Tampa around 9 a.m. Monday.

While in route to the scene, police received a call indicating the shooting took place at a home in the 1500 block of East 27th Avenue across from the school. Police met with the resident who said someone he knew drove by and fired several shots at the house. He said he returned fire in self-defense.

Police said one round from the shooting struck the exterior door of the school. The door, which was locked, leads to a stairwell that is being used for storage. There are no students or classes in that area.

Police said no arrests have been made at this time.
