BRANDON, FL — A deputy shot and killed a man who was holding his 7-year-old brother hostage in a Brandon home on Sunday afternoon, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies responded to a domestic violence call at the home just after 2 p.m. after being told that a child was being choked by his older brother, who was armed.

They found the suspect, Mario Camacho, 27, had barricaded himself and his brother inside a back bedroom, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies heard the child screaming for help and kicked down the door. They found Camacho, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet and two tactical vests with ballistic plates, holding a knife and refusing to let go of the child, the sheriff’s office said.

After Camacho repeatedly ignored commands to drop the knife, a deputy shot him and rescued the boy.
