FL Man Charged After Binging On Junk Food Inside Closed Walgreens

Police said the Edgewater man consumed chips, chip dip, Reese's, Ghirardelli chocolate bars and Dr. Pepper while in the store.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL — A Florida man is facing charges after authorities said he spent hours inside a closed Walgreens feasting on junk food and stealing cigarettes.

Christopher Morgan, 46, of Edgewater, is charged with numerous counts including burglary of an unoccupied structure, battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and felony petit theft following the Monday incident, according to Volusia County court records.

New Smyrna Beach police were called to a Walgreens on State Road 44 around 3 a.m. after the company said there was a man inside the store, which had been closed since 10 p.m., the agency said in a news release.

Police said security footage showed Morgan enter the store around 9:40 p.m. He went into a bathroom and exited five hours later, according to authorities.

Security camera footage then showed Morgan walking around the store and taking various items including food and cigarettes. He consumed several food items while in the store, police said, including chips, chip dip, Reese’s chocolate, Ghirardelli chocolate bars and Dr. Pepper.

Police said Morgan made no attempts to exit the store or call for help.

Officers eventually unlocked the doors and took Morgan into custody. According to police, Morgan spit on an officer and resisted efforts to place him in the back of a patrol car.

Morgan is currently being held at Volusia County Jail on a $13,000 bond, according to court records.
