K9 Gets Credit for Nabbing Career Criminal

This is the 38th time the Tampa man has been arrested.

When a family gathering turned violent Sunday afternoon with a shot fired, the suspect’s attempt to flee was derailed courtesy of Hillsborough County K9 Bullit.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident unfolded around 4:22 p.m. at 12310 27th St. N. when Glennis Mays, 21, and another man at the gathering got into a fight. Mays is accused of pulling out a firearm and firing a single bullet, attempting to strike the other man, the sheriff’s office stated in an email to media.

Mays then retreated into his home and snuck out of the back bedroom window, the email said. From there, he ran through the yard, scaled a fence and fled into a wooded area.

When deputies responded to the scene, they set up a perimeter and called in the aviation unit and Master Deputy Grecco, who brought along K9 Bullit to search for Mays.

It didn’t take Bullit long to track the suspect, the email stated.

The dog found him hiding in thick brush and grabbed his left arm, holding him until deputies were able to move in and cuff him.

Mays was treated on the scene for the bite.

“Mays is a certified gang member and this was his 38th arrest within the county,” the email stated.

The latest charges against Mays include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm in a public place and opposing an officer with violence.

Mays was being held in the Hillsborough County Jail Monday in lieu of $3,000 bond.
