Mommy Makeovers Continue to Increase in Popularity

New data shows significant increase in Mommy Makeover procedures in 2015

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (May 10, 2016)—According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 62 percent of mothers would consider having a “Mommy Makeover” if cost were not an issue.

The Mommy Makeover or restoration of a sexy pre-pregnancy shape has increased in popularity in recent years. This includes a combination of procedures such as a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or breast lift, liposuction or CoolSculpting, feminine rejuvenation and/or Brazilian butt lift, depending on the patient’s desired result.

“Women of all ages want to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies,” said Christian Drehsen, M.D., Medical Director of Clinique of Plastic Surgery, based in St. Petersburg, Fla. “They feel like their bodies have lost their shape, curve and firmness after pregnancy that no amount of diet or exercise will restore.”

The popularity of the Mommy Makeover has steadily increased over the last several years. According to the ASPS, there were 127,967 tummy tucks done in 2015, a 104 percent increase from 2000. Breast lifts saw an 89 percent increase during the same time period, with 99,614 of them done nationwide in 2015.

When done together, these procedures – in addition to the others often included in the Mommy Makeover – can help restore the body’s silhouette to its pre-pregnancy shape.

Before having the procedure, the patient should ideally reach her goal post-pregnancy weight. She should also be done having children and done breastfeeding, and must wait at least six months after her last delivery.

“The Mommy Makeover should be viewed as a body restoration procedure,” said Dr. Drehsen. “To optimize results, it’s best that the patient has lost her post-baby weight and has the procedure only to contour the body and create a naturally beautiful silhouette.”

In terms of recovery, patients should set aside four to six weeks following the operation. During this time, they cannot lift anything heavy – including their children.

A careful review of the patient’s goals and expert examination by an experienced surgeon is paramount to achieve the best results, as the surgeon can determine the most appropriate procedures to achieve the desired result.

“Ask about the surgeon’s board certification and request to see before-and-after photos before scheduling your surgery,” said Dr. Drehsen. “This is an important decision and should not be taken lightly.”

Clinique of Plastic Surgery will be hosting an informational event about the Mommy Makeover, “Focus on Restoring Your Pre-Pregnancy Shape,” on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its office, located at 240 1st Avenue South in St. Petersburg.
