New Social Group for Adults with Autism or other related disabilities to host its first event

TAMPA, FLORIDA - Help Us Gather, or HUG, has created a new social group, Friends on the Spectrum, for adults on the autism spectrum, or related disabilities. Friends on the Spectrum will host its first meeting January 26, 2018 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm which will feature a game night at St Paul United Methodist Church in Largo, Florida.

Friends on the Spectrum focuses on providing a safe and enjoyable environment for adults living with autism or autism-related disorder. The group gathers in a sensory-friendly environment to foster friendships within the community, with each event showcasing a different theme. Any adult on the spectrum is encouraged to come to the event and may bring a friend, family member or a support person. There is no cost to attend and the environment is one where all can feel welcome and comfortable.

HUG is a non-profit that was launched in the fall of 2017 with a goal of connecting individuals with disabilities to fun social events in the community. Since the launch, HUG has identified the significant need for more social opportunities for adults living with disabilities. Many people feel isolated due to their disabilities and HUG is working to make a positive change.

HUG, along with even co-sponsor, Kim Clariy, recognizes a need for social opportunities for people on the ASD spectrum. Kim has a master’s degree in occupational therapy. She is an active public speaker and advocate for programs designed to make the world around us a more sensory-friendly place.
