TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay Food Tours had the opportunity to try out another new Tampa gem at 4034 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

Paul's Fusion Kitchen has only been open a few months, but the spot already has a loyal following. The simple dining room makes the most of the 30-seat vertical space and strip mall setting.

The family-owned and -operated restaurant features lunch and dinner menus with inspiration from Thai cuisines. Namesake Chef Paul (dad) is in the kitchen, mom is at the front of the house and son/owner Piya is close at hand.

Let's dig in!

House made Vegetable Spring Rolls (three): This is not your food court roll. These house-made spring rolls are made with vegetables including mushrooms, carrots and cabbage. The chunky fresh vegetables and tangy sauce make this a standout starter.

Paul's Crab Cake: Maryland-style with a twist, lump crab meat, side of sautéed spinach, garlic, bacon and a side of jasmine rice. I seldom order crab cakes as they can be hit or miss on texture and questionable fillers.

I am happy to report Paul's version is simple. Well-seasoned quality lump crab meat seared to golden brown with a squeeze of fresh lemon to brighten and served with a creamy dipping sauce to beautifully round out the flavors and textures. The vibrant spinach is an optional side dish I highly recommend if not included with your dish.

Red Duck Curry: Roasted duck coconut curry and side of jasmine rice. I read several online posts about how impressed guests were with the duck curry, so again I ventured out of my comfort zone to great success. The tender duck was ample in the dish and the acidity of the tomatoes and sweetness of the pineapple all played nice in the rich broth.

Blackened Prime Rib Sandwich: Thinly sliced prime rib on French bread with horseradish, romaine lettuce, onion, tomato. I could make four meals out of this beautiful sandwich.

Chicken Cashew Nut: Sauteed chicken with cashew nuts, mushrooms and a side of jasmine rice. A solid dish that was delicious to the last drop.

Spinach salad: Spinach, bacon, artichokes, egg, tomato and blue cheese with poppy seed dressing. Again, freshness reigns and each element top quality.

Paul's is still building its own dessert menu. We enjoyed the creamy featured blackberry-lemonade pie which was from Home | Mysite (zukiespies.com)

Note that Paul's does not have its liquor license yet. We have gotten a little addicted to the Thai iced tea, traditionally a mix of black tea, spices, sugar, sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk.

There is something for everyone at this likeable family spot, and we hope you will visit soon.
