Rainy, Foggy Conditions Likely to Continue

Rain chances rise as the week wears on.

Tampa Bay area residents are being asked to exercise caution on local roads and waterways as bad weather moves into the region.

Foggy conditions have plagued the Bay area over the past few days, resulting in extremely low visibility on coastal waters. Tuesday morning’s fog forced the closing of Port Tampa Bay while also stranding several ships in the Gulf, The Tampa Tribune reported. Fog is also being partially blamed for a boat running aground and into a restaurant in Ruskin Monday evening.

While the National Weather Service’s dense fog advisory is expected to expire at 1 p.m. Tuesday, the agency warns that fog could remain an issue through Wednesday. Visibility in some areas has been cut to a quarter-mile or less.

Meanwhile, storms are expected to begin moving into the area Tuesday afternoon and rain chances will stick around until Saturday at least, the agency reports.

Tuesday bring about a 20 percent chance of rain throughout the afternoon and evening hours while the likelihood of storms rises to 30 percent during the daytime Wednesday and around 60 percent during the overnight hours.

Thursday is likely to be the rainiest day of the week with a 70 percent chance of storms during the daytime and 30 percent chance overnight.

Thunderstorms are also possible as this latest cold front moves into the region. In its Hazardous Weather Outlook report, the National Weather Service says it’s possible some “isolated strong to severe storms could occur,” mostly north of Tampa Bay. “The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts, but a weak tornado cannot be ruled out.”

The cloud cover and storms should keep temperatures low throughout most of the week, but they won’t reach the freezing and near-freezing marks felt recently. Friday’s high, however, is expected to only climb to the low 60s, making it the coolest of the week.
