Police shot an armed robbery suspect at a CVS store, but another man remains on the loose.

Motorists may find South Tampa traffic a bit heavier than normal as police continue to search for a suspect in an armed robbery that ended with one suspect shot by police and the other on the lam.

Road closures include Moody Avenue from Swan Avenue to West De Leon Street, according to the Tampa Police Department. West De Leon Street from Moody Avenue to Armenia Avenue is also closed for the investigation. No schools or daycare centers are on lockdown, the agency reports.

The incident that led to the road closures began to unfold just after 1 a.m. when two people walked into the CVS on South Howard Avenue and pointed a gun at a customer, the department wrote in an email to media. The customer was told to leave the store and did so.

Once out of the store, however, the customer called 911.

Inside the store, the two men robbed a clerk and gunpoint, police said.

“She complied, but the suspects became increasing aggressive when she was unable to open additional registers,” the department’s email stated. “They dragged her around the store attempting to force her to open registers. When they released her, the clerk was able to hide in a back room and call 911.”

Unsatisfied with what they clerk was able to provide, the men then grabbed the store’s manager and “violently dragged her through the store as well trying to access cash registers.”

As first responders arrived, one of the men was coming out of the store. The officers told the man to get to the ground, but he didn’t comply, the email said.

“Both officers fired and the suspect was shot at least once,” police said. “He then fled on foot for approximately two blocks.”

Officers were able to take that man into custody at Moody Avenue and West De Leon Street just before 1:30 a.m. The man was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The second man ran out the back door in an unknown direction, launching an extensive search that continues.

One of the officers was taken to a local hospital for observation, but police report he is in good condition.

While police have not released the name of the man who was shot, they say he is 29 and was released from Florida State Prison in July 2014 following two prior robbery charges.

The officers names have also not been released. They are both on paid administrative leave during the shooting investigation.

No further details are available at this time.
