Sheriff Helps Safeguard Crossing Guards With Electronic Whistles

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is taking steps to protect one of its precious resources — school crossing guards.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — Ahead of the new school year, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is taking steps to protect one of its precious resources — school crossing guards.

Hundreds of crossing guards, most of whom are senior citizens, will be heading to their designated school crossings on Aug. 10 to ensure that school children get safely to and from school.

So, to make sure these crossing guards are equally protected, Sheriff Chad Chronister has invested in 400 electronic whistles that crossing guards can activate without removing their face masks.

These devices produce the same sound as a traditional whistle with the touch of a button.

"Our crossing guards provide an indispensable service to our children and their parents," Chronister said. "In turn, we want to do everything we can to protect their health."
