Because of the number of people in the area, officers on scene did not see who shot the victim, police said.
Police also addressed social media reports claiming a Tampa police officer was involved.
“The Tampa Police Department is aware of reports circulating on social media that a Tampa Police Officer was involved in the shooting; however, we can confirm no Tampa Police officers were involved in the shooting, and no officers discharged their firearms during the incident,” police said.
The department also shared body-worn camera footage from the scene. (Watch the video below.)
Detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting and are seeking leads.
“As friends and family are grieving an unimaginable loss of a loved one, our detectives are working tirelessly to identify and arrest those responsible,” the department said. “We urge the community to look past online rumors and focus on facts that will help us catch the actual shooter and find justice for the family.”
Police said there were dozens of people near the victim before the shooting, along with hundreds of others nearby, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We encourage anyone with information that can assist detectives to share what they know,” the agency said.
Anyone with information is asked to call 813-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477). Police said tipsters should reference case number 2026-367709.
