Time Running Out on SunPass Transponders
The old battery-operated models won't work as of Jan. 1, 2016.

TAMPA, FL â Tampa Bay area motorists who rely on their SunPass transponders to keep their toll payments in order might want to check their model types soon.
The SunPass Tag Swap Program comes to an official end on Dec. 31, 2015. The old battery operated transponders will no longer be accepted after that date to pay tolls on such roads as the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and the Suncoast Parkway. The state is offering a free swap out of the old model for the new one at no cost to motorists who take advantage of the program before its Dec. 31 end. Motorists can choose a multi-vehicle transponder or a new single-vehicle permanent sticker in place of the battery operated models.
As of November, the state reported about 100,000 older models were still in use.
