Here are the top stories today in Tampa:

1. Tropical Storm Ian is continuing its approach toward Florida with the Tampa area still in the projected cone for the storm. Ian is the ninth named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season and will likely become the first storm to hit the United States. Local leaders, including Mayor Jane Castor, are encouraging residents to remove yard waste ahead of the storm. (Florida Patch, WFLA)

2. Homelessness is increasing in Polk County and donations are needed more than ever as nearly as an estimated 2,400 students experience homelessness, according to Polk County Public Schools HEARTH Project. Advocates partly blame the rising cost of living in the area as Florida faces an affordable housing crisis. (ABC Action News)

3. 32-year-old Juan Ariel Molina-Salles of Honduras was arrested Friday after a manhunt in the death of Pinellas County Deputy Michael Hartwick. Police say Molina-Salles struck the deputy while driving a front-end loader with a forklift and killed him instantly, proceeding to then flee the scene. The accused admits to fleeing the scene out of fear. His bond is set at $500,000 after the state requested an increase. (WFLA)

4. Evictions rose to all-time high in Hillsborough County in August. 761 writs of possession were given to tenants in August by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, according to court records. 1,288 residential evictions were filed August in Hillsborough County courts as well. 5. Historic Tampa Theatre in downtown Tampa has revealed the schedule its "A Nightmare on Franklin Street" movie series. Films on the list include Friday the 13th, Hocus Pocus, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tampa Theatre officially turns 96 years old this October as well. (That's So Tampa)
