Quick-thinking crew members and passengers on board the Disney Magic cruise ship are getting the credit for spotting and rescuing a man who fell overboard from a competitor’s ship in the Gulf of Mexico last Thursday.

According to the Royal Caribbean website, a passenger on board its Oasis of the Seas fell overboard about 8 miles off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico. The man, Frank Jade, was spotted by those on the Disney Magic cruise ship.

“The Disney Cruise Line ship lowered a rescue boat into the water and were able to pick him up,” Royal Caribbean’s website stated. The Disney ship then docked at Punta Langsota so Jade, who was said to be in stable condition, could receive medical care.

The Disney ship was able to spot the man after the fall because it was following the same path as the Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean noted.

Thursday’s accident raises questions about whether cruise ships have enough safety measures in place to detect when passengers go overboard, First Coast News reported. Jim Walker, a maritime attorney, was quoted by the paper as saying cruise ships need better detection systems.

It remains unclear how Jade fell overboard.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas has a homeport of Port Everglades. Disney Magic is based out of the Port Canaveral area.
