16-Year-Old Accused In St Pete Shooting With Stolen Handgun

A Pinellas County teen was accused Friday in the accidental shooting of his 9-year-old nephew with a stolen handgun​, police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A Pinellas County teenager was accused Friday in the accidental shooting of his 9-year-old nephew with a stolen handgun at a Red Roof Inn, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The 16-year-old boy, whose name is being withheld by Patch because of his age, is facing multiple charges, including grand theft of a firearm, violation of probation for burglary and felon in possession of a firearm.

A spokesperson for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said the 9-year-old was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm. The sheriff's office described the wound as a non-life-threatening injury.

The 16-year-old was taken into custody near the motel, according to the sheriff's office. Police K-9s discovered the handgun during a search.

The teenager was taken to Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center.
