20-Year-Old Woman Dies From Falling Palm Tree On Egmont Key

A freak accident has killed a 20-year-old Tampa woman.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- A freak accident has killed a 20-year-old Tampa woman.

About 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, Isabel Melendez was lying in a hammock at Egmont Key State Park when a palm tree fell and landed on her.

The state park is located on an island about 1 1/2 miles off the Pinellas County coast. It is accessible only be boat so both the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Eckerd College Search and Rescue team responded to the state park to render assistance.

Melendez was transported to Bayfront Hospital St. Petersburg where she was pronounced dead.
