A Match Made in Party Heaven: Wood-Fired Pizza and Upscale Beer Side-by-Side

Before the end of the year, Pete's Wood Fired Pizza will share a building and patio with the wildly popular World of Beer in downtown St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG - Cookies and milk. Barbecue and sweet tea. Pizza and beer.

Some things just naturally go together. A brew and pizza slice are a match made in partying heaven. A gourmet combo of the popular pair is coming to downtown St. Petersburg.

Imagine some of the best beers available in the world next door to some mouth-watering gourmet, wood-fired pies.

This culinary collision is expected to arrive by year's end, when World of Beer will open a new location right next to the new location for Pete's Wood Fired Pizza, at 300 First Ave. South.

The two establishments will be side-by-side, and try to make the most of it.

While previous reports have the two new stores open by September, just in time for football season (how tantalizingly convenient?), employees at the World of Beer location at 5220 Fourth St. North, said the company hopes to open the its downtown operation in up to six months.

The current World of Beer on Fourth St. North will remain open and no changes there are planned. The new downtown location hopes to replicate the wild success of the Fourth St. North store, which features nearly 600 beers, 500 different bottled beers, along with live music on weekends.

Highlighting the merging of the upscale pizza and beer offerings will be a patio the two businesses will share. Beer drinkers will be allowed to meander over for a slice of pizza while the pizza lovers can walk to grab a beer while they wait for their pie.

In addition to wood fired pizza, Pete's also offers wines.

The new downtown location will be Pete's Wood Fired Pizza's first in Pinellas County and just the second store in the Tampa Bay area.

Per the company website, World of Beer has 13 Florida locations, currently seven in the greater Tampa Bay area. Patrons will not find the popular domestic brands such as Budweiser, Coors or Miller. World of Beer only stocks specialty beers, craft beers and select international bottles of beer.

"When people ask for Natty Light, we just laugh at them," a bartender at the Fourth St. North location said, who would not release his name.

World of Beer is sort of an upscale sports bar, with many large flatscreen TVs to watch virtually any game televised.
