The truck, driven by 37-year-old Jake Gauthier, was traveling west on the road when the crash happened.

McFall was hit by the truck after stepping into the road to remove the turtle and thrown to the ground, investigators said.

He was brought to a local hospital, where he is in life-threatening but stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Gauthier wasn’t injured in the crash.

Investigators said that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be a factor in the crash.
