Officers responded to a report of gunshots in the area and found the victim at the scene.

Afentakis was brought to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries a few hours later, police said.

A man who lives in an apartment building near where the shooting happened heard the gunfire.

“I was like, well, it is a holiday, so maybe it could possibly be fireworks or something like that. But then I heard an ambulance, and then no real noise after that,” he told WFLA.

The suspect is still at large Tuesday morning. No information has been released about the suspect’s identity.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call St. Petersburg police at 727-893-7780 or text SPPD and the tip to TIP 411.
