Man Walking On I-275 Dead After Being Hit By 4 Vehicles: FL Troopers

A St. Petersburg man died after being hit by four vehicles while walking in an I-275 travel lane, FL Highway Patrol said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 39-year-old St. Petersburg man died Wednesday night after being hit by four vehicles while walking in a southbound lane of Interstate 275, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release

The crash happened near milepost 25, at 38th Avenue N., around 9 p.m.

The victim was walking in the inside travel lane within the path of four oncoming vehicles traveling south in succession, troopers said.

The man was hit by all four vehicles and suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

None of the drivers were injured in the crash.

One of the drivers, 29-year-old Howard Lee Lockett III of St. Petersburg, fled the scene after the crash but was later returned by a family member, FHP said.

Troopers arrested Lockett, charging him with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. The Infiniti QX60 he was driving was later located by the St. Petersburg Police Department, FHP said.

The other vehicles involved were a BMW 320i driven by a 22-year-old St. Petersburg woman, a Toyota Corolla driven by a 20-year-old Tampa woman and an Infiniti G37 driven by a 23-year-old St. Petersburg man.
