ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 40-year-old St. Petersburg man is facing federal charges in connection with two bank robberies in Pinellas County in which he allegedly wore an "old-man" mask as a disguise, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.

David Sartin Jr. was charged by criminal complaint with two counts of bank robbery, the department said. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison on each count.

Sartin robbed a bank in Largo on Aug. 24 and another in St. Petersburg on Sept. 15.

During both robberies, he allegedly wore a prosthetic mask, approached tellers and demanded money, instructing them not to include dye packs, the DOJ said.

Sartin used a bicycle to approach and flee the first robbery before retrieving a vehicle he had staged nearby.

Surveillance footage and evidence collected from his home and storage unit allegedly linked him to both crimes, the department said. The items recovered included disguise materials, clothing matching that seen in surveillance footage, a fake handgun and the prosthetic mask with gray facial hair.

Sartin was on supervised release for a 2018 federal conviction stemming from five bank robberies in Texas in 2016. He was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison in that case. In 2008, he was convicted of attempted bank robbery in federal court.

The FBI, Largo Police Department and St. Petersburg Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Belkis H. Callaos will prosecute it.
