Bay Area Hospitals Included in National Data Breach

An estimated 4.5 million patients nationwide may have been affected.

Several hospitals in the Tampa Bay area are among those impacted by a recent data breach involving Community Health Systems’ properties.

Hackers got into the company’s computer system and were able to take the Social Security numbers, names, birthdates and other information belonging to an estimated 4.5 million people, Bay News 9 reported. The chain operates 200 hospitals nationwide and 26 in Florida.

Community Health Systems believes the hackers are from China, according to the Nashville Business Journal. It says patients who have received treatment over the past five years could be impacted. The company is notifying individuals directly and is offering identity theft protection services, the journal reports.
